I do penetration testing.....not users per say but all machines in the enterprise. I like NetRecon, but there are others out there....like SATAN for instance. Good thing about commercial products is the fact that it is more than just a port scanner....it goes in and tries to crack passwords on a local subnet, and really sort of emulates a cracker or a hacker's behavior. Here is another very generic piece of advice: if you use snmp, change the community name of the target device from PUBLIC to something else. Otherwise any ass with an snmp probe can sneak a peak at your genitals.

There are a bunch of really good, free web based penetration testing tools out there. I am, however, sometimes leery of those since you never know who's on the other end of that connection.....and because of that fact I hesitate to recommend.

The references here about security on cable systems are a very good point. Just out of curiosity, how many of the users on this list scan their users to detect open/shared resources? We do this periodically and have helped our clients close up some dangerous and potentially disastrous security holes. Of course there is no substitute for having it done professionally by an unbiased third party.
