Subject: The 20 DNS-based spam IP databases (RBL, ORBS, etc.)

For anyone who is interested, there are now 20 distinct databases that let you test incoming (or outgoing) mail against their list of IP addresses known or believed to send spam. Since most people are unaware of all but the most popular ones (RBL, DUL, ORBS "all", and RSS), we have put together some information on the 20 different DNS-based spam IP databases that we have encountered.

These tests vary quite a bit as to what is listed. For example, ORBS has a "spam haven" database of mail servers that continually send out spam (as opposed to the controversial main ORBS database that lists any open relay it hears about). MAPS DUL just lists "dial-up lines" (since virtually all mail clients send their mail to their ISP's mail server, rather than directly to the remote SMTP server). Then there is a little-known ORBS database that includes open relays as soon as they are discovered, unlike the main database that has a grace period.

For the details on all 20 tests, you can go to http://www.declude.com/JunkMail/Support/ip4r.htm .

If you are looking to run these types of tests on IMail, you'll need to get a program like our Declude JunkMail ( http://www.declude.com ), Len's IMGate ( http://imgate.meiway.com ), or a gateway such as MailShield ( http://www.mailshield.com ). -Scott
