yes, it will. It accepts the mail, then immediately tries to send it to the next higher, reachable MX (if you had 5 MX's for a domain)

I run two IMGate's as MX 10 and 20. I very rarely seen any traffic on the 20 box. ie, trying the backup MX, ime, is exceptionally rare.
That said, if you have domains on both boxes, then each provide backup MX for the domains on the other box. This shares your total traffic/web access over two boxes, and gives you backup MX.
