Hi Jefferis -
I think what you may be seeing is an artifact of MP3 compression. While MP3 compression does a terrific job of keeping file sizes small, it does have some limitations that you should be aware of. The higher frequency sounds tend to get lost during heavy compression.
Whenever I have high frequency event sounds, I find that I need to do a lot of testing to get the compression level that makes me happy. In the Sound Properties dialog (double-click on the sound in the library) you can mess with the compression settings and test them at their export quality.

I am using streaming with default publishing as MP3 16 fast.

For mac they were 22khz AIF files.

Are you talking about import quality here or export quality as something other than default Mp3?
It's funny, but music usually sounds just fine at MP3 16 fast. It's the other sounds that seem to be awful.
