Subject: SLM or metadata - pre's and contra's

Hello,

I'm currently brainstorming about the way to set up a site. One thing I'm not sure about is how to relate content to a page and how to build the site navigation. Let's take a site for a company with business units which quite operate the same. Every business unit has it's own domain, are flexible in creating their own menus but follow the same basics (same site layout, same templates, same information types).

1. You can use the Spectra approach by using containers and rules to display content, and use the SLM to do the site navigation. 2. Another approach could be to relate content to a metadata hierarchy, the metadata hierarchy reflects the site layout.

The benifits of approach 1 are: - follows the spectra methodology

The benifits of approach 2 are - when working with muliple domains you can easily migrate the metadata structure to another hierarchy. Every BU has it's own hierarchy. - more ease to determine the relationship between content and pages - more easy to implement - more ease in maintenance

The contras of approach 1 are: - approved to be hard to implement and to be hard in maintenance

The contras of approach 2 are: - slow because of metadata. caching is relevant - metadata keyword must be quite unique to prevent getting the wrong information (CATS and CATS AND DOGS 'bug' in metadata)

Can you tell me your thought about this approach and has anyone followed this approach before (what are your experiences)?

Thanks, Johan
